The ship is also quite large, making it all the more difficult to surpass obstacles. Since bosses send out exponential flurries of shots, your only hope of surviving them is to either find a safe spot (if there is one) or continuously throw bombs which absorb all on-screen bullets. One of the biggest problems with Raiden Trad is that the speed of your ship is way too sluggish, making it difficult, if not impossible, to avoid bullets when there are a lot of them on-screen. Explosions also sound muffled, and the "rat-a-tat" effect of your ship's laser is annoying and unrealistic. There's practically no excuse for this, since the SNES has some of the best sound capabilities of any system I've heard. However, they sound very subdued and the instrumentation is generic. Much of it consists of hard-driving, catchy themes. The most positive aspect of Raiden Trad is its music. Some aspects of the graphics actually hinder gameplay! Although enemy bullets are very large, they are the same yellow color as your own plane's shots, so it's hard to see them when they cross paths. Some things look strange, such as the smoldering mark left on the ground by destroyed enemies. One prominent example of this are the asteroids that appear in the space levels: They're about as generic a "rock" graphic as there ever could be. Many of the objects, enemies, and bosses are very dull. But even SimCity looks better than Raiden Trad. In fact, there's an area where you fly over a town that looks exactly like something out of SimCity. There was more detail and even some animation in the backgrounds, such as one part where you can see a farmer and a herd of cows down below, which doesn't exist in Raiden Trad. But I've seen what the first level of Raiden looks like on the Playstation's Raiden Project game (which is supposed to be arcade-perfect), and it looked somewhat better. Granted, it is based on an early 90's arcade game, and therefore, I could be forgiving of that. Raiden Trad's graphics are not very colorful and have an overall "washed-out" appearance. Well, after having completed Raiden Trad on every difficulty level, I can honestly say that Raiden Trad isn't just a bad port - it's a bad everything! If it hadn't been for Alpha Mission, Raiden Trad would be the worst shooter I've yet played. I've also heard that Raiden Trad for the Super NES is a really bad port of that game.

Wait… WAIT! Alright, there is one home version of the game that is okay – Raiden II on the PC for Windows.I've heard much ado about the classic arcade shooter game Raiden, although I've never played it. It’s safely in a box, waiting for the day that I can restore a cabinet, invite some friends over so that we can all enjoy the thrill of playing Raiden on an arcade machine again. The arcade version rules supreme, so much so that I also have the original jamma board – the only arcade game I own. Yes, I have Raiden for the PC DOS, PS1, PC Engine, Megadrive and even SNES. With it’s catchy tune (it’s playing in my head right now) just writing this review urges me back to an arcade (where are they all gone?) wanting to play this game again. Sit in one spot too long and you’ll know about it. None of this bullet-hell rubbish, just a few well placed shots. There aren’t zillions of enemies or even bullets on the screen at once. Give me the likes of Raiden anytime! Who can forget the first time they collected enough powerups to create the mega blue gun? Or the fan-spray of the powered-up red gun? And what about those awesome green homing missiles? And did anyone ever use the other slow firing missiles? Shooters became a garish, bullet-hell nightmare where you weren’t so much as shooting but dodging an ever increasing swarm of bullets. Somewhere after that time, things started to go horribly wrong. In my humble opinion, the late 80’s and early 90’s was the period of time where the best arcade shooters saw the light of day.

If that wasn’t enough, you can bring along a friend and have two players at the same time for double the blasting fun! Beautiful and vibrant graphics, lots of selectable firepower and excellent and precise controls. It’s the perfect vertical scrolling shooter. When I first saw Raiden at the arcades, I knew it was the start of a long love affair that is still going strong today. Raiden is the classic arcade game having all the elements which make up the best of the vertical scrolling shoot ’em up genre.
